What appears to be a hit and run turns out to be tragedy in Trenton, New
Jersey. Police discovered an abandoned vehicle smashed into a highway concrete
barrier on 12/21. Without a driver, they worked the case as a hit and run.
When parents learned 5 days later of the car crash, and having posted a missing
person report the day of the crash, they visited the crash site with
relatives. After a search down an embankment, they discovered their
19 year old sons body. Reportedly, he had either been ejected from the vehicle,
or fallen to his death, after the crash. It is easy to blame the police,
but if people wouldn't flee crashes with such regularity, the police may
not have jumped to that assumption so quickly. In a sad way, this innocent
young man was a victim of the plague of hit and run accidents.

12-9 Clark County (Kentucky) sheriff's deputies were stunned when they
pulled over a van which had just committed a hit and run accident, to find
a 39 year old drunk and semi conscious in the drivers seat, while a 7 year
old boy , sitting on his lap, steered the vehicle. While the child was driving
at the time of the crash, the adult was arrested and charged with leaving
the scene, among other offenses. The 7 year old and 3 year old in the
van are in protective custody. The 'family' was living in the van and enroute
to Florida, according to CNN.

was so sad I felt the readers should see it. Losing a child is any mothers
nightmare, but in what can only be described as just too cruel for any mother,
23 year old Rory McDowell died today when his car slid off the road and
struck a tree. Barley 20 minutes later, and 5 miles away, his brother, 21
year old Cory McDowell's car also went into a skid, crashing onto a tree,
killing him. Our heartfelt sympathy to this family, both sons of a local
sheriff's deputy.

When an unconscious woman was brought to an Aurora, Colorado hospital
on 11/30, police didn't know who she was because after being struck by a
hit and run driver, someone had stolen her purse. Police are baffled
why no one in the rush hour traffic stopped to help the victim as she laid
motionless in the street, yet someone found time to rob the woman. As of
12/4, mother of seven, 46 year old Stephanie McSweeney, is still in a coma.
Our prayers are with her and her family.
As for the driver and purse thief - further proof, that in our evolutionary
process, some of those who claim to be human, haven't yet completely evolved
from the animal world.

Note - a driver convicted of aggravated manslaughter, vehicular homicide
and fleeing to elude an officer causing death in the October 2, 2004, death
of Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Darryl Haywood, was sentenced to 30 years
in prison this month. I had the good fortune of working with Trooper Haywood
while serving as a dispatcher with the FHP. As in any occupation, there are
those officers who bring honor to their job, and those who just do the job.
Trooper Haywood brought honor to the FHP and the citizens of Florida and
he will be sorely missed. Rest in peace Trooper.
