1. What the ..?? A jury in Chattanooga, Tennessee decided not to
 convict
Joshua Sides of vehicular homicide by intoxication in the death
of 20 year old Nicole Greco, but instead convicted him of vehicular homicide
by reckless conduct, third offense DUI, reckless
endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident where a death occurred.
The difference - a sentence of 3 to 6 years, compared to the 20 he could
have gotten. Here are the jury instructions for the charge of

2. And if Tennessee juries appear soft, be careful in Montana.
KTVH is reporting today that 10 year old Jesse Calder was pulled out of school
and away from a spelling test to appear in court on charges of failing to
yield to oncoming traffic two weeks ago. And the traffic? A hit and run driver!!

Australia - Under new proposed laws, hit-and-run offenders will face 10
years imprisonment for leaving a victim to die at an accident scene, compared
with the current maximum penalty of 18 months. It comes too late for bicyclist
Ian Humphrey, whose killer, a lawyer who admitted drinking wine before the
2003 hit and run crash, was fined $3100 this week and had his license suspended
for a year. By this coming Saturday (5-8), 4000 bicyclists would protest
in front of the Parliament House, and the country's Attorney General would
publicly apologize to the family for the sentence.
