The Pennyslvania Lackawanna County District Attorney
apparently hasn't got the news yet that their state Congress is fed up
with hit and run drivers, as new and stronger legislature is expected to
be introduced soon. They decided not to press charges against the hit and
run driver who killed 26-year-old Jason Petrucci last month. The car dealership
owner, who had had a few beers, claimed he thought he hit a sign, and
the prosecutor, in this case, bought it. Comment - Besides the obvious
puzzlement in wondering if anyone of less stature in this county would receive
such special treatment, I must note that apparently hitting a sign in
Pennsylvania is not classified as a crash. So, God help the person who misses
a stop and is killed or kills because someone has knocked down a stop sign
earlier that evening and drove home. |

In a move that is sure to raise eyebrows across our nation's cities, the
Washington State Court of Appeals overturned a lower court dismissal, and
stated Heather Benskin’s parents could sue the city of Fife for not
properly supervising a driver on probation for his fifth drunken driving
conviction. That driver, while on probation, killed Heather March 9, 2003,
in a wrong way crash. The driver is currently serving a 8 year sentence for
vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and leaving the scene of an accident. |

South Africa - a mother with her 1 year old baby tied to her back is struck
and killed by a BMW. The driver calls a friend with a tow truck, and
has the BMW towed from the scene before police arrive. When police trace
the car, they find the decaptiated infant inside the BMW. Both the driver

Australia is fed up with hit and run drivers. Any person found responsible
for causing a hit-and-run fatality will be charged with manslaughter, under
moves announced by the South Australian Government. A 15-year maximum sentence
will apply to a first offence of causing death by dangerous driving. A life
sentence will apply if there are aggravating circumstances, including fleeing
from police or high blood alcohol levels. Attorney-General Michael Atkinson
says licence disqualifications of 10 years will also be imposed on convicted
drivers after they serve a sentence.

the shoulder of a highway in front of a bank, a 41 year old pedestrian was
struck by a 14 year old unlicensed hit and run driver, who had lost control.
Critically injured with 2 broken legs, head trauma and a fractured pelvis,
the pedestrian was taken to the hospital where he was cited for being intoxicated
on a highway. The driver was later captured and arrested.

Daniel Donrantes killed when wrecker jumps onto curb in Los Angeles, California.
Eight others injured. Driver of stolen wrecker had just got out of prison,
where he had been since 1998, only 3 hours earlier. Subject had fled from
an earlier minor hit and run collision and probably would have fled this
one, had he not hit a pole, injuring himself.
25 year old Sharon Ann Steele is still unconscious in the intensive care
unit of Akron General Medical Center with severe brain injuries after being
struck by a hit and run driver on 9-30. The arrested driver has been charged
with hit-skip, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a
suspended license. He has been charged 16 times since 1991 for driving without
a license.
