Hurting Kids
(9-16) 14 year old Tony Cantu was walking with a friend in Thornton,
California, Friday evening when they were both struck by a hit and run driver
at 9:45 pm. Tony's friend regained consciousness and stumbled home, where
he was taken to the hospital, injured, in shock, with no idea what had happened
to him. Suffering memory loss he forgot about Tony, who was planning on spending
the night, and the critically injured boy spent the entire night laying
in a ditch, where he was discovered the next morning at 10:34 am. Tony is
in very critical condition at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento,
California, and could use your prayers. (update 9/28 Tony's
aunt advises this site Tony is doing better)
Also, in Cape Coral, Florida, 14 year-old Casey Minervini is in critical
condition after being hit by a hit and run driver (update
- awakened from coma 9/25 and upgraded to serious
condition).
14-year-old Joshua Sherwood is in critical condition in Kanawha County,
West Virginia after being hit by a hit and run driver on 9/24.

History records that on Sept. 13, 1899, Henry H. Bliss,
a 68-year-old real estate broker, was knocked down and run over in New York
City, making him the first pedestrian traffic fatality in the United States.
According to Aaron Naparstek in a June 1, 2005 New York Press article, he
mentions a possible case of hit and run (further research needed).
"A 1900 New York Tribune item tells the story of a nurse struck and killed
by an automobile. According to the account, the driver didn't slow down or
steer out of the way, but "considered his responsibility fully discharged
by ringing the gong."
