After our first accident, I told Lacey to stay in the car because I thought we were on the side of the road, and I got out to check on the driver of the Nissan that I later learned had fled the scene. I turned around to get Lacey once I saw no one was in the Nissan and the truck was coming. I ran screaming towards her to get out and I almost made it. I was less than ten feet away when the Semi blew the car 20 feet down the road and through the air. Lacey was ejected from the vehicle (She almost made it out) but she'd been killled by the initial impact.

If this coward had run the other way, since he was so able bodied to be running, Lacey might not be on your website. But I want to thank you that she is, things being as they are.

Bremerton Girl Dies in I-5 Crash

A Bremerton teen died early Wednesday in a chain-reaction accident on Interstate 5 south of Red Bluff in Northern California.

Lacey Chantell Zink-Castro, 17, was traveling in a 1995 Toyota Tercel driven by David Olivas, 20, of Belfair, according to the California Highway Patrol. The car was struck by a 1991 Acura Integra in wet and windy weather.

The Tercel came to a stop and Olivas said he got out to check on the Integra's driver. While he was outside the vehicle, a tractor-trailer rig hit the Tercel.

Castro was thrown from the vehicle and killed, said CHP spokesman John Balma.

Castro died of multiple injuries, according to the Tehama County, Calif., Coroner's Office.

There were no reports of Olivas being injured.

The big rig crossed the center divide and southbound lanes, landing in an embankment with its trailer sticking out into traffic. A second tractor-trailer traveling south collided with the trailer. No injuries were reported in that collision.

The accident still is under investigation. The person driving the Acura fled the scene and was still being sought Friday, Balma said.

North Mason High School authorities said Zink-Castro was a junior there at the beginning of the school year. Her grandmother, Sharon Castro of Port Orchard, said she was currently enrolled at Olympic High School.

She was 6 feet tall and very artistic with beads and drawing, said Sharon Castro. She also enjoyed working with autistic children as a teacher's assistant.

With flaming red hair, she was "a beautiful girl," her grandmother said.

Zink-Castro was engaged to Olivas, the driver of the Tercel, Sharon Castro said.

"She was a beautiful person," Olivas said.

The family was working on arrangements for a memorial service, tentatively scheduled for late next week at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Bremerton.
